Today was a lockdown drill! Just a drill! However the grade level you think that could handle it completely just fell apart. 6th grade was the loudest group out of the whole school. Two boys even started a physical fight during it. By the end of the drill we had a physical fight, name calling, 3 girls crying, 1 teacher crying and it was less that 18 mins that the school asked them to sit quietly to practice a drill they have been doing since kindergarten.
When did kids get to this point of just flat out defiant? I felt so bad for the first year teacher in that room. I asked her if she was ok. She is new to not only teaching but a Title one school. So she saw a physical fight and heard awful name calling today. I think for her it was just so emotionally taxing and shocking to her. Me and our assistant principal went in to address what had happened and why we do these drills. Why they need to take them seriously. I told them unfortunately in this day and age we have to practice for these types of events and it makes me sad for our world. But we as a school have to keep all of you safe. I really do hope that they got the message today and how serious it really is.
All I can say is if you have kids at home please educate them on why schools practice lockdowns, fire drills and lock outs. It’s not because we want to it’s for the safety of the whole school.
